The iconic Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has taken on another ambitious adaptation project with the release of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway 2 being debated. The Gundam franchise has expanded exponentially since its inception in the late 1970s. It has almost shaped into the existing super robot-driven mecha genre as we know it today.
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway 2 has been causing a bit of stir following the release of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway 1 in June 2021! With the buzz about the film trilogy, here’s all that we know about the upcoming Gundam film.
About Mobile Suit Gundam
For newcomers to the franchise, Gundam might be an intimidating universe to explore. The story of Gundam spans multiple animated series and movies that have been released since the 1980s and continue to dominate the mecha genre, also while being greatly responsible for developing it. The series was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 1979 after he had created other works with the same theme in mind.
Tomino’s work in the mecha genre became particularly notable with the release of Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979-1980. The first Gundam series was only the beginning. The series has featured several anime seasons adapting Tomino’s work as well as OVAs, ONAs and movies. Gundam even has its own video game franchise!
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Trailer
The only information we have is that Part2 is coming. But the date is a mystery. An official trailer is too early to be released. It will be made available a few months before the actual announcement. In the meantime, one can revisit the Part 1 trailer and watch it on Netflix!
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway 2 Plot
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway is a trilogy of films that feature the central character Hathaway Noa, the son of Bright Noa, a veteran pilot, a commander, a key member of the Earth Federation and one of the most prominent characters in Mobile Suit Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. Interestingly, Noa is also known as Mafty Navue Erin, an apparent anti-Earth Federation terrorist.
The organization called Mafty proves Noa a chance to get the revenge he desires while also aiming to destroy the Earth Federation. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway is adapted from Tomino’s series Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Flash that was created in 1980. The film trilogy by Sunrise Tokyo has only released the first film as of September 2021 and the other two are expected to release subsequently.
According to recent reports on developments, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway 2 is going to be titled ‘Son of Bright’, after Bright Noa, who was a prominent figure in the Universal Century Timeline.
Synopsis for Hathaway’s Flash on Netflix reads:
“After Char’s rebellion, Hathaway Noa leads an insurgency against Earth Federation, but meeting an enemy officer and a mysterious woman alters his fate.”
Producer Naohiro Ogata has said that the upcoming film will digress a little from the source material for Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway 2 but details are getting to be known.
Hathaway Flash’s original release followed the events immediately after Char’s Counterattack which was close to the Second Neo Zeon War. The aftermath of the Counterattack pushed the events around young Noa to turn him into the man he becomes in the Hathaway series. In essence, his defection buts him right opposite what his father fought for. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway 2 is likely to build further on this relationship.
Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway 2 Release Date
There have been no official announcements about expected release dates for the remaining two films. However, they have already been added to My Anime List and is rated 8/10! From what is known, the second film is already in production! On the basis of the pace of production, speculations are rife that Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway 2 release in theatres may happen in November 2022.
Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is all set to land on Funimation via Mobile Suit Gundam Wing in September. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway Part 1 is already streaming on Netflix that had procured the airing rights for the first film. The other two parts will be added to the catalogue upon release. Since the movie is set to revolve around Bright Noa, it is important to note that the original voice actor for the character passed away in 2006. He will be voiced Ken Narita, who also voiced Bright in the 2010 Gundam series. The Voice cast for the movie at the moment include:
