It sounds incredible and unbelievable, yet it’s all true! 2003’s most beloved Futurama anime series is finally coming back to television for the 3rd time. After its sudden cancellation, Hulu has managed to negotiate a deal of 20 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. The sci-fi animation plus comedy Futurama will premiere on Hulu in 2023. Mind you, not with yet another revival film, but with a real new season of Futurama.
“I’m thrilled to have another chance to think about the future… or really anything other than the present,” said Cohen while making the announcement.
Added Groening, “It’s a true honor to announce the triumphant return of Futurama one more time before we get canceled abruptly again.”
The animated show’s first season debuted in 1999 and ran for 4 years, until 2003 before it got cancelled. After 5 years, in 2008, it was again brought to life. It again ran for 5 years before getting cancelled in 2013.
Futurama anime returns to Hulu with new episodes
Futurama is coming back to life! Hulu has announced that the beloved cartoon series is getting revived once again. Creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen and the principal cast will return to the show as well.
This was announced by Hulu who, through a press release, made it known that the show created by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen will return to our screens starting from 2023. It is expected that production will be kicked off in February 2022 so that it can premiere in 2023.
It is speculated that 20 episodes of the Futurama anime will run in two batches. The adult animated comedy series focuses on the life of a 25-year-old pizza delivery boy, Philip Fry. By accident, he freezes himself on December 31, 1999, and time travels 1,000 years later. He gets a new lease of life with new friends including Leela (Sagal), a one-eyed mutant, and Bender, a robot.
Futurama anime Cast
The voice cast of the original series including Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr and David Herman, will bring back life to characters for these new episodes.
Is John DiMaggio Returning As Bender?
The voice behind foul-mouthed robot Bender aka John DiMaggio will be absent in this series. The negotiations could not get through because the compensation was not adequate according to DiMaggio. He felt that he was not compensated in proportion to the incredible success achieved over the years by the Futurama anime series. Apart from Bender, there are two more prominent voice artiste names missing.
Producers are still hopeful that DiMaggio will join the team but they have also not dropped the idea of a replacement. However, Futurama fans are not happy with the decision and that includes DiMaggio himself it seems.
If you have never watched the adult animation content of Futurama, all the episodes and existing seasons are streaming on Hulu.
If you don’t know, there are 4 animated films based on the Matt Groening series available on the platform that can be added to binge-watch list.
