What is Tokyo Mew Mew New About?
The story begins with Ichigo Monomiya, a regular middle-schooler in Tokyo Japan. As the shoujo genre goes, she asks her crush Aoyama out for a museum date which ends up going south. Ichigo could not have predicted an attack of literal aliens which leads to many people getting injured. A strange light basks her and bestows powers upon her which she uses to save Aoyama.
Ichigo is finally told by Ryou and Keiichiro that the has been selected for the Mew Mew Project and has had the DNA of an endangered species of cat merged with her. This also explains her catlike gestures and behaviour after the museum incident. She soon meets others who become a part of the team and each has a unique set of powers that they must now use to fend aliens off their world.
The Chimera Animas turn animals into monsters and is a stepping stone in claiming earth as their world. The Mews Mews is a prime example of the magical girl genre in shoujo that actively incorporates romance, adventure, and specific aesthetics. Tokyo Mew Mew New is a reboot of the original series that follows the same original plot. It was also produced to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the manga series which was first released in 2000.
