Overlord Season 4 is right around the corner and there’s every reason for a refresher on the series before it releases. Overlord began as a light novel series created by Kugane Maruyama with illustrations by so-bin in 2010. Online publishing soon shifted to Enterbrain. The Overlord manga adaptation by Satoshi Oshio is also currently at 15 volumes.
The Overlord light-novel series has 14 volumes at present with a note from the author that the story will end with Volume 17. That said, the Overlord anime adaptation by Madhouse Productions still has a long way to go. Given the go sign earlier this year, Overlord Season 4 is already in production and has begun releasing updates on its upcoming season!

Overlord Season 4 Trailer
In a surprise announcement on the Kadokawa Anime Youtube channel dated December 17th, 2021, the franchise unveiled the first official Overlord Season 4 trailer. It confirmed that the next Season is coming up in 2022. However, no official date was announced, but fans can not stop speculating it to be in Summer Anime Calendar 2022.
There were a few more surprises. Another one is Overlord would receive a feature movie and it would adapt the Holy Kingdom Arc.
But that’s not all, the franchise has decided to launch a “2D Action Game”, titled OVERLORD -ESCAPE FROM NAZARICK. The setting will be around getting out of the underground tombs of Nazarick. The title will be released on the Nintendo Switch and on PC via Steam and based on the original story by light novel author Kugane Maruyama.
Kugane Maruyama’s original Overlord IV has got a release date. The TV broadcast has been revealed in a new trailer by Madhouse.
The Overlord Season 4 premiere date is Tuesday 5th July and it will be a weekly drop. Apart from the release date, the trailer also reveals the opening and ending theme songs. The OxT duo will perform the song “HOLLOW HUNGER” while Mayu Maeshima of Re:ZERO Season 3 OP song fame will sing “No Man’s Dawn”.
What is Overlord About?
Overlord is set in the year 2126 where Dive MMORPGs are a popular phenomenon. Within such a game called YGGDRASIL, the time for the servers of the game to shut down starts drawing close. After having been around for almost 12 years, Yggdrasil has a lot of players who feel attached to the game. A guild within the game called Ainz Ooal Gown is also trying to bid goodbye to its members and players.
Only four members remain, with one of them being the Overlord who maintains their headquarters at the Tomb of Nazarick. The Overlord, Momonga realizes that his friends in the real world have their own lives and their world in Yggdrasil will have to come to an end. As the servers shut down, Momonga tries to live his final moments in the game before it’s over.
To his surprise, the game does not disappear. Nazarick gets warped into another reality where the non-playable characters seem to come to life in a way where they gain their own personalities and act like real people. Confused by this, Momonga discovers that he can’t use any general features of the game or even leave it.
He tries to find other people who may be trapped in this world while protecting Nazarick. As it turns out, the Momonga too gets affected by this shift, where he becomes more like his game avatar who is morally dubious and does not hesitate in killing others.
What will be Overlord Season 4 plot?
The illustrator of the light novel series and character designer for the anime adaptation has stated that the upcoming season will be adapting the trailing Volume 10 of the light novel series which corresponds to the Ruler of Conspiracy Arc.
Ainz Ooal Gown is coronated and now plans to make his nation a peaceful haven for all races alike. While this is well-received in his own kingdom, the rules of the other kingdoms plan to oppose this move. Ainz opts to strengthen the Adventurers and encourage adventurers in his lands, The Sorcerer’s Kingdom.
The rulers of the other countries are shocked at the sudden emergence of Ainz’s country and offer countermeasures against it. As the ruler of his land, Ainz is left to protect his kingdom while maneuvering the other rulers in his favour.
How many episodes will Overlord Season 4 have?
Overlord Season 1 to 3 had 13 episodes each and began airing in 2015. It is expected that Overlord Season 4 will also have 13 episodes, mere speculation based on the past. Each episode will be titled differently.

Where Can You Watch Overlord Season 4?
Overlord was released as a television anime series with its first few seasons. Crunchyroll streamed the anime and Funimation streamed the English dub version of it. That said, an Overlord Season 4 Crunchyroll release is definitely on the cards and Funimation should be joining the English Dub team as well.
As for other platforms like Netflix, the site only hosts two of the movies in most regions with the Overlord anime seasons unavailable for these regions. Overlord The Undead King and Overlord The Dark Hero are streaming on Netflix!
Currently, it is only possible to watch the previous seasons on HULU, although I trust that Crunchyroll wil soon acquire the broadcast rights.
A New Overlord Movie on the Way!
Along with the announcement for Overlord Season 4, a new untitled Overlord movie has also been announced! The details for the project will be revealed subsequently but for now, it is confirmed that the new Overlord anime movie will adapt the Holy Kingdom Arc which corresponds to the Paladins of the Holy Kingdom Arc of the light novels. The movie will adapt light novel volumes 12 and 13.
The movie will be the third major movie release from the franchise following Overlord The undead King and Overlord The Dark Hero not counting the side-stories with chibi characters.
