The Rise of the Shield Hero blends the dark fantasy (like Goblin Slayer) and isekai genres. A recent release, it has gathered a significant following and perhaps justifies its ratings of 8/10 on My Anime List, 8.1/10 on IMDb, and 4.7/5 on Crunchyroll. Needless to say, the reviews are spectacular. A common thread in reviews is that the series provides a fresh take on the isekai genre, which itself has a barrage of fans.
The light novel series, Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari, by Aneko Yusagi, was originally published through the Shousetsuka ni Narou service as a web series. It began in 2012 and ended in 2015 with 22 volumes to date. From August 2013, Kadokawa took over and began publishing in print with illustrations by Minami Seira. The manga adaptation of the series is written by Aiya Kyuu and published in the Monthly Comic Flapper. The manga presently has 18 volumes.

What is The Rising of the Shield Hero About?
True to the isekai genre, our protagonist, Naofumi Iwatani was warped into a parallel world and he has no idea what’s going on. Turns out, now he must become one of the world’s Cardinal Heroes along with others, Motoyasu Kitamura, The Spear Hero, Ren Amaki, The Sword Hero, Kizuna Kazeyama, The Hunting Hero, and Itsuki Kawasumi, The Bow Hero.
Naofumi receives the legendary shield and becomes the Shield Hero, while the others receive weapons. Where The Rising of the Shield Hero moves away from traditional fantasy hero setups is Naofumi having no institutional support. The Princess of the kingdom tricks and frames him and this travels solo after being humiliated by the kingdom.
In his travels, he finds Raphtalia, a demi-human girl, and Filo a bird monster who become his companions as he continues his mission to counter the threat of the Waves.

With Season 2 almost a few months away, Kinema Citrus has begun posting teasers on her YouTube channel. They are mostly around the main characters of the anime. The last trailer was around Raphtalia of The Rising of Shield Hero.
Now another one has been recently released where we get the opportunity to know Filo and exquisite animations. One gets a peek into the storyline where Filo, as a monster egg, is being purchased by Naofumi in a slave shop. When young, it is a giant bird of the Filoliale species. The girl is also gifted with wings and remarkable resilience. Raised none other than by a Hero, Filo is also destined to become the queen of her kind.
The trailer walks us through the time when the egg hatched and Filo was introduced in Filoliale form. She turns out to be one of the most loved characters of The Rising of Shield Hero. Filo’s different moods are captured also captured in the video from joyful to angry moods.
A new trailer for The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari) second season has been released on the official website. The video confirms that voice actress Kana Hanazawa will play the character Ost Horai.
The MADKID group from the Season 1 makes a comeback to perform the opening theme, with the single “Bring Back”. The ending theme has been sung by the singer Chiai Fujikawa who also makes a comeback from Season 1 with the single titled “Yuzurenai”.
The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 Plot
The Rise of the Shielding Hero Season 1 had a 25-episode run in 2019 after its announcement in 2017. Season 1 of the anime covers events till volume 5 of the light novels which is volume 11 of the manga. Essentially, The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 will be taking off from volume 6 of the light novel/volume 12 of the manga.
The first season ended with our heroes in the Cal Mira islands. The story continues after their return to Melromarc, Naofumi’s distress of reconciling with the need for revenge and the meaning of being heroes. With new enemies and challenges in sight, Naofumi must traverse a difficult path where his friends are under threat too.
The coming season will continue after the Cal Mira arc as in the web novels. The upcoming story arcs covered should be The Spirit Turtle Arc and The Rebuilding Arc which is divided into two parts. Four volumes of the novel can provide a complete story for an entire season. Defeating the Spirit Turtle will be one of the most difficult missions for the heroes and will be one of the primary themes of Season 2 along with Naofumi’s turmoil.
How many episodes will the rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 have?
Season 1 of the anime released 25 episodes. With the release of The Rising of the Shield Hero right around the corner in Summer 2021, it is likely that the coming season will follow the same pattern. It was speculated that Season 2 might go for a split-cour broadcast. It essentially means the season will release in two parts with 10-13 episodes each, like in Attack on Titan Final Season.

When is The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 Release date?
The Rise of the Shield Hero Season Official Twitter had earlier added an announcement on March 6 that Season 2 would be coming in October 2021. The caption for the post read
“I’ll protect them, no matter what. Shield Hero Returns this October.”
Unfortunately, the release of the anime has been pushed to a 2022 slate. With an announcement on July 8, The Rising of the Shield Hero is now Scheduled for release in April 2022.
“Due to various reasons, we have decided to postpone the broadcast of The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2, which was scheduled to start broadcasting in October 2021,” stated the official website. “We are currently planning to start broadcasting in April 2022, so when the detailed date and time is decided we will announce it on the official website.”
April 2022 Anime lineup appears to be lit up with many titles and a few vying for the first-week slot. The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 release date has been announced. It is coming to grace your screens on April 6. It will be broadcast on AT-X, TOKYO MX, KBS Kyoto and other stations in Japan on Wednesday, April 6 at 23:30. The simulcast episodes will stream on Crunchyroll shortly after they debut.

The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 1 released the English dub simultaneously with the Japanese episode release. The anime has been licensed by Crunchyroll-Funimation for North America and it is, therefore, reasonable to assume that the English Dub for The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 will be available on Crunchyroll as well other websites that release episodes for the series.
The Rising of the Shield Hero will stream for user base of North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS.

Cast for The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2

The trailer had also announced a few changes in Season 2. From the production team, Masato Jinbo (Syomin Sample, Restaurant to Another World) is replacing Takao Abo, the director. The anime studio of Season 1, Kinema Citrus will team up with South Korean animation studio DR Movie. Keigo Koyanagi (The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Made in Abyss, Hanasaku Iroha) will take up writing and supervising the scripts.
With a Spring 2022 release window, the anime has also been renewed for another Season – The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3. It was confirmed by Kadokawa producer at Virtual Crunchyroll Expo 2020 with the assurance that the wait will not be long enough. The original announcement was done at the same time as Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Season 2.
